SNL Recap – Josh Brolin
This week’s MVP was Jay Pharoah. From Will Smith to Jay-Z, Kanye West to an old high school principal (which, attention teachers and students, really made Pete giggle), Pharoah stole the show. This week featured plenty of laugh out loud moments. Here are some hits and misses.
High Points: The return of old friends Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, and most of all Bill Hader’s Rick Perry in the cold open. Jason Sudeikis nailing his Mitt Romney impression with the great line, “And I’ll have a napkin.” Andy Samberg’s Weird Al and Super Bowl tight rope dancer impressions. Both SNL Digital Shorts, especially Laser Cats 7 with director Steven Spielberg. It was “Hitchcockian!”And the Game of Thrones behind-the-scenes piece. We even laughed at “The Californians”—which makes me happy for whomever wrote that sketch because you know they’ve been suggesting it forever.
Low Points: Not much to complain about. The Weekend Update segment was just average and we’re tired of the Garth and Kat routine.
Missed Opportunity: Again, not much to complain about. I, Mollie, feel that Nasim Pedrad’s Kim Kardashian impression is weak. I love anything that lampoons the KarDAZians, but something is off about SNL’s take. The voice? The hair? The posture? It could all be better.
Musical Guest: Yes, that first song is good. But the highlight of Gotye’s appearance was Taran Killam and Andy Samberg’s Gotye fanboys Digital Short.
Ending Credits: Just lots of hugs. Jay Pharoah still dressed at Principal Fyre. Also to be noted, the bumper photos were extra good. An SNL-commercial-break-photo-style photo shoot is on my bucket list.
Saturday Night Live is in reruns until May 5th. We doubt Brian Williams will watch the Lana Del Rey repeat next week.
